A superb and little visited biv, nestled inside the bush on the eastern slopes of Mid King. It can be difficult to find.
Sleeps: two to three (no bunks, but three on the floor is a squeeze).
Heating: No.
Camping: Limited but possible outside the biv.
If trying to visit, the key to the route is to get to the 2nd to last open gravel patch on Mid King Spur before the beech forest. Look for a small cairn and drop off to the right (looking down hill) into low leatherwood and tussock on a short steep face. Pick up a series of cairns that zig-zag down and bring you to the entrance of the track hacked into the high leatherwood. if you don't find this you are in for a grovel, once you do find it a good track leads to the biv.
DoC have now put orange triangles down through the Leatherwood to the biv. You still need to get down or up Mid King spur but don't drop off until you can see the triangles.
good trip up from Mitre Flats, tere is a LARGE triangle at the turn off. Nice spot!
Visited just the other day (7 April 2010) and had no trouble with the trail up to mid-king from Mitre Flats Hut. The sort route to the bivvy is well marked once you emerge from the stunted bush. A beaut little location!
