New Elder biv (really a small hut) has four bunks and great views right down to Wellington and the Kaikouras. It sits on Renata ridge between the Hutt and Waiotaru catchments.
Sleeps: Four plus one or two on the floor.
Heating: No
Camping: Some limited tops camping on the summit of Elder, plus a couple of spots down the spur where the old biv was located.
Walked up Renata Ridge from Akatarawa Saddle 18th July. Mist then drizzle and cold wind, snow the last 400m to Elder Hut. Shame no fire but nothing a good sleeping bag couldn't handle. Walk back down was great with fantastic views both East and West. Well worth the effort......
