Easter is a great time for trampers, since we get 4 days in a row to visit somewhere a bit more interesting than a typical overnighter!
One of those more interesting places is a spot called "Ruahine Corner hut" in the far northern end of the Ruahine range.
This spot takes at least 2 days to reach, and 2 days to return home, making it pretty damn remote!
Ruahine Corner hut is on the border of a massive flat tussock plateau, and has some special rock formations on the way:
The route
This trip runs from March 29th to April 1st, the full 4 days of Easter weekend.
This trip requires decent fitness, and involves 4 big days of challenging terrain.
In typical Ruahine fashion, tracks are likely in not very good condition and travel along the tops will be scrubby and rough.
The plan is:
- Friday: drive from Wellington to the roadend at Sentry Box hut, walk up to Parks Peak hut and spend the night there. (2-3 hrs)
- Saturday: long day in-and-out of two river valleys to reach Ruahine Corner hut. (8-10 hrs)
- Sunday: spent almost entirely on the open tops, eventually reaching Aranga hut, which is a derelict closed hut, so we will be tenting nearby and just making use of the water tank. (7-9 hrs)
- Monday: returning to the roadend via Sentry Box hut again, then driving back to Wellington. (3-4 hrs)
More information will be added to this page closer to the date, including food and gear requirements.
Sign-ups will also open once club meetings begin properly for the year.
