Organiser: Toby Burgess
Hello everyone! I will be leading a one-day trail-run Starting in Red Rocks and Ending near the Zealandia Visitor Center. This will be moderately difficult and is intended for semi-experienced runners.
Pace and general info: The track is well-marked and well-maintained. I plan to maintain a slower running pace between 5:20 to 6:00 minutes per kilometer, however pace will be adjusted as needed. We will be ascending between 600 and 650 meters of vertical elevation, so be prepared for some hills. In total we will be running 16-18 kilometers.
Equipment: We will cover a significant distance, so please come prepared. Bring along your own water and snacks. If possible bring trail-running shoes and puffer/rain jackets. It will be very windy on the trail so bring layers.I will have a running backpack, but will have limited space so bring a running pack if you have one. We will have to cross some minor streams to be prepared to get your feet wet or bring an extra pair of socks. A phone would also be good incase of emergencies.
Meeting location: plan to meet at 8:20 am at the Lambton Quay Hunter Street bus stop. We will catch bus 29 to Owhiro Bay.
General Route: The run will begin at the Te Kopahou Visitor Center in Island Bay. We will start by following the red rocks coastal walk. Hopefully we will see some seals along the way. We will then follow the Red Rocks Track that goes through Kopahou reserve, and then end the run by running along the Zealandia fence line track. Along the way we will visit the radar station, Woofington Castle and the Brooklyn Wind Turbine. The run will end at the Zealandia visitor center or if we’re feeling up to it we can run down to the Hunter Carpark.
Run may need to be rescheduled due to excessive rain or wind.
