Lake Taupo - Kawakawa Bay!
Fancy climbing some rocks? Well then, come on my trip!!
We'll be going to Kawakawa bay for some incredible lead climbing - including single and multi pitches! There are also a whole lot of Trad routes if that's your preferred style!
Climbing grades run from 16 to 26, so there's something for everyone! We do ask that you have some prior experience with climbing - including being confident with belaying and having climbed on rope before. For other skills like route cleaning, abseiling, and multipitching, we'll be running a rope skills training session at Hangdog in the week leading up to the trip (exact date tbd). This session is likely to be mandatory - just to make sure we're all up to speed to stay safe :)
If you want to have a look at the details for the site, here is the official guide https://www.opuslocus.com/downloads/kawakawa-bay-guide-2020-12-v16-A4.pdf
Food and Accommodation
Although the exact details haven't been worked out yet, we'll probably be camping!
We'll aim to provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner - and any snacks you want to bring are up to you! As far as I can tell, there is no water source at the campsite, so we'll be bringing drinking water and probably taking showers in the lake! (So bring your bio-safe shampoos and get ready to be cold).
Transport
If you have a car, please come on this trip. We'll need some drivers to bring us all up to Lake Taupo!
Once we get there, we have two options for getting to Kawakawa Bay from the nearest parking - we can either do a short 1.5 - 2 hour hike, or take a boat! The choice depends on what people vote they'd rather do. (Boat = cool = we can bring more stuff = but more expensive).
What to bring
The club is providing a lot of the necessary climbing gear - including quick draws, harnesses, helmets, slings, caribiners, ATCs, bouldering mats, trad gear, and so on. The only climbing-specific thing you really need to own are climbing shoes. And of course if you have your own gear, please bring it along!
You'll also need ascent shoes - such as hiking boots or sturdy running shoes - and lots of warm clothes. Don't forget beanies and gloves and lots of waterproof + windproof layers.
Sleeping bags, mats, tents, and other necessary camping equipment can be borrowed from stores, but please bring your own if you have it.
As mentioned above, you'll need snacks and drinks if you want them, and bio-safe cosmetics.
Other than that, you could bring some games, speakers, or anything else you fancy carrying to and from Kawakawa bay!
And if you realllllly want to make me happy, you could even bring me a little present :)
