Bird of the Year 2024 - voting OPEN!

Forest & Bird run an annual competition called Te Manu Rongonui o te Tau - Bird of the Year! This event aims to "raise awareness for our native wildlife, their habitats, and the threats they face." Many of Aotearoa's bird species face a high risk of extinction, with 82% of indigenous bird species facing some survival risk as of 2023.

Now, Conservation Officer is *supposed* to be a neutral office, and I'm *definitely* not allowed to tell you what to vote for. So you should definitely vote for my pick, the Kākāpō! They're a critically endangered species, and super iconic. I love their speckled green feathers and adorable beaks, so GO OUT AND VOTE!!!

Did I mention the BBC described Kākāpō as "fat, flightless parrots which, when threatened with attack, adopt a strategy of standing very still indeed"? What's NOT to love?!?!?! I won't pretend Kākāpō didn't win in 2008 and 2020, they should win every year ;)
