Over Labor weekend, there's an amazing opportunity to experience Tasman Glacier and the mountains of Aoraki/Mt Cook up close. Anyone of any level of skill or experience is welcome!
Ex VUWTC member Ivan is organizing a protest against the helicopter tourism on Tasman glacier. Helicopters fly over the glacier around every 15 minutes, mostly for brief(up to 1 hour) heli-hiking and sightseeing trips. Helicopters have a huge impact on the climate so this activity is melting the very glaciers that it's trying to enjoy. The noise also spoils the enjoyment of the park for everyone else trying to walk underneath.
Anyone of any level of experience is welcome. We will be carrying large banners to areas all around the glacier, so if you don't have experience travelling on snow or on glaciers, your help would be much appreciated. There's large areas of loose rock(moraine) near the bottom of the glacier which has become difficult to traverse after the glacier has melted, so it would be super helpful to have anyone with decent tramping experience but not glacier tramping experience.
We will need to sort transport to and from Otautahi/Christchurch. If anyone is in a hurry, flights are cheap if you book early. Or we can take the ferry and hitchhike, or drive if we have a group of at least 4. Sign up and I will make a chat. If you can't make it because of cost but really want to come, I think there's arrangements that can be made.
