Wednesday, 26 March 2025 from 5:30 PM to 10:00 PM
Organisers: Patrick Hayes, Tommy Thomson
We are running an evening canyoning trip this Wednesday with Craig Scott(ex VUWTC). It's suitable for complete beginners to the sport who are keen to learn, as long as your comfortable tramping down a stream.
Arrive at the Hunter Carpark by the gear shed at 5.30pm (latest 5.45), for sorting equipment you'll need. Departure at 6pm
We will drive out to Dry Creek, near Haywards interchange in the Hutt. We'll follow a walking track for about 1 hour until we reach the stream, at which point we'll kit up and follow the stream back to the carpark in the dark, going past some interesting features including a waterfall!
What YOU need to bring:
- CLOTHING TO KEEP YOU WARM WHILE YOU'RE WET AND COLD. Ideally a wetsuit (your old Warehouse one will do), otherwise bring multiple layers of thermal tops and bottoms, and raincoat and overtrousers, thick woolen socks (or neoprene socks are even better). Gloves and a beanie might be nice too
- HEADTORCH - most of the river travel will be in the dark. You need your hands free for abseilling and scrambling. Phone lights are NOT SUITABLE. You can get one for $20ish from the supermarket, hardware store, ect.
- Suitable footwear - trail shoes or tramping boots
- Water bottle
- Snacks
- Extra emergency layers plus clothing for the walk in
- Drybags and snaplocks for anything you don't want to get wet
- A backpack to carry your drybag on the walk in. If it has holes in the bottom this is ideal for water drainage.
- Maybe a towel and change of clothes to leave in the car (you never know if your drybag will stay dry...)
What the club can provide (but please bring your own if you have them!)
- Climbing helmet
- Harness
- Abseil device (Figure 8/ Canyon specific descender/ ATC)
- Locking carabiners, Accessory cord, sling
Let us know if you can bring a car, this trip is limited by cars and drivers
