Organiser: Ben Carpenter
This is a beginners course or instructing course on the Tongoariro Crossing. If you have never been on snow and don’t know the difference between Graupel and a Grivel come along and find out over the weekend. Also if you have attended a snowcraft before and want to come and refine your skills on some terrain that is a bit more exciting than the Whakapapa ski field, this is for you.
As well as the beginners course we will be doing instructing course for snowcraft for those who have done a few snowcrfts and are keen to lead snowcraft next year.
Numbers will probally be capped at two cars but we will see how many cars show up!
We will be leaving Friday night (24th Sep) as early as possible and returning on the Sunday (26th Sep) late. We will be staying in Mangatepopo hut for the weekend so you will need to bring two serviced hut tickets with you (15$ each from the DoC shop on Manners Street).
Your boots will need to be ridged enough to take crampons, they should be tough to bend when trying to stretch them with your bare hands. If you are unsure, send me a photo or bring them to a meeting.
Gear wise, it’s gonna be cold so make sure to bring the alpine gear list as well as the general gear list, waterproof pants, gaiters, beenie, gloves and a good jacket are all a must – If you are not sure about gear email me! I would much rather fix your gear now than up on the snow. We can supply ice axes, crampons and helmets. You will need your torch!
We will supply breakfasts on Sat and Sun, and dinner on Sat, you will need lunch and snacks for the two days on the mountain. Fri and Sun nights will be takeaway going up/down from the mountain.
I think that’s it, costs will be around $60 not including your hut tickets.
See you there!
